So What is With the Name Post Up Careers?

Franklin Buchanan |

People sometimes wonder how I came up with the name Post Up Careers. Well, the truth is, I didn’t. My wife did.

Those that know me know I am an avid fan of basketball. For a 5’9” guy, I certainly don’t have the build of a typical basketball player, but that’s never stopped me. I love the sport so much that I volunteered to coach a group of 2 -grade boys when I was 24 years old and I’ve never looked back.

I’ve coached 11 seasons of basketball as a volunteer coach and am currently on a brief hiatus as my wife and I have just recently welcomed a baby girl into our family. But coaching or not, basketball is in my blood.

So, how does that have anything to do with this? Well, my wife has heard me talk relentlessly about posting up in basketball. According to Wikipedia, “to ‘post up’ is to establish a position in the low post, the area near the basket below the foul line, usually in order to take advantage of a smaller defender. The offensive player usually faces away from the basket, so that his body can protect the ball from the defender.”

We were eating dinner in Hilton Head Island when my wife looked at me and said, "Post Up Careers." We weren't even discussing business at the time, just enjoying some fresh seafood. I asked her what "Post Up Careers" was supposed to be and she said, "that's going to be the name of your business."

I was sold. I called my college roommate later that night and asked for a website referral, went to all of the various government offices to file the paperwork and on May 22, 2019, Post Up Careers was officially official.

In your business life, to post up is to take that leap toward your next career move which, hopefully, is a move up in salary, position, responsibility, flexibility, or all of the above. I hope that you’ll let me coach you on how to post up in your career just as I’ve coached my boys in how to post up in basketball.
