Can ChatGPT Write a Cover Letter?

Franklin Buchanan |

A few weeks ago, I asked ChatGPT to write a resume to see what it delivered. I was certainly left less than impressed with its results, but figured let's see what it can do for a cover letter. It can't be worse right?

Unlike the resume, I came away somewhat impressed with what it delivered. I used my own experience in recruiting as the base for it, and asked it to write a cover letter for a recruiter job.

I have a full tutorial on writing a cover letter but my philosophy behind a cover letter it is that it is not about you, but the job you're applying for. The full cover letter template it created is below, but first a few of my thoughts.

1. I like in the first paragraph it immediately speaks to passion, but I'd like to see it more focused on what the job is actually asking for.

2. The second paragraph is quite good, it overviews its perceived knowledge of my career pretty well and how it equates to talent acquisition. You want to equate your overall experience to how it is relevant to the job you're applying for.

3. The third paragraph and the qualifications statements are where the cover letter starts to lose me because it's getting long at this point. If you're looking to transition into a new field this is a chance to speak to those qualifications, but if you're looking to step up or even move sideways I think you're better off talking about your current role and how it's relevant.

4. The last 2 paragraphs could really be combined into a single paragraph reaffirming interest and alignment.

Overall it's not bad and is something you could easily customize for your future applications. If you're struggling with a cover letter, head over to the Professional Profile services page and see how Post Up Careers can help!
